Saving the whales is still a hot topic because they are very special creatures. These beautiful marine animals are unique in size. Whales are actually the largest animals to exist on the planet. In addition, their brains are very big and complex. In fact, their brains have been rated higher than the brains of primates such as chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans and just below a human’s brain. Whales are also highest on the food chain and have been living on earth for over 25 million years. This makes them special to the field of biology. These marine animals are also aesthetically pleasing to look at and are very photogenic. As a result, they are often used in artistic expressions.

Whales are still a hot topic for saving because they are culturally, politically and symbolically special. Whales exist in oceans around the planet. These sea mammals are not exclusively found in one spot. This means that no group can really claim the right to kill these animals. These special aquatic creatures also make us feel good when we view them living in their natural conditions. Whales symbolize to us the importance of maintaining ocean life and protecting the environment from water pollution as well.

Whale watching can be a fun and educational experience. There are a few things you want to consider before embarking on a Whale Watching Adventure.

Safety

Make sure the tour that you decide to take has an acceptable rating when it comes to Safety. The boats should pass frequent local and federal inspections with ample life preserves and experienced staff.

Locating Feeding Spots

The key to seeing whales is finding their feeding spots. Whales will follow the live food and their location changes frequently. Make sure to research the reputation of the company giving the tour to ensure they know where to go, rather than just heading out for the same location each time.

Researchers vs. Tourist Attraction

A group of researchers may offer to take you on their next trip, and they will put in a greater effort to find whales. This will provide you with the ultimate experience in Whale Watching. A tourist attraction trip has your non-refundable ticket fee and may be more interested in selling you tacky souvenirs and drinks along the way.

When In Doubt…

Check your local Better Business Bureau, ask your friends, and do your research on online review sites. Even if a company offers you another trip free for not seeing whales on the first trip, this may not be helpful if you are traveling to go on a Whale Watching tour.

Whales are beautiful, intelligent mammals that live in the ocean and breath air through their blowholes which act as lungs. Whales are the only mammals that live their entire lives in the ocean besides manatees.

Whales even have a small amount of hair although it is a lot less than other mammals and by the time they are adults, the have almost no hair left. They are warm blooded mammals with a four chambered heart. They have mammary glands in which they use to feed their offspring.

The largest whale is the Blue whale which gets as big as 94 feet long.Is this new to you? Catch up here The smallest whale is the Dwarf Sperm whale which only gets as big as 8.5 feet long by the time it reaches adulthood.

The fastest whales are the Killer whales and the Shortfin Pilot whales which can swim up to 30 miles per hour. Many whales migrate over long distances every year. They usually travel in groups or pods from cold water feeding grounds to warm water feeding grounds.

Whales are very social mammals with the strongest social ties being between mother and baby. They do not lay eggs but rather give birth to live offspring. They usually breed in warm tropical waters, seasonally and have a calf every one to three years. They are pregnant for as long as 9-18 months and the calf can swim as soon as it is born.

Humans have been fascinated by whales for years. These graceful giants frolic in our oceans, and while much has been discovered, these huge mammals still hold some mystery. There are 86 recorded species of cetaceans (whales, porpoises, and dolphins) and while they all share some characteristics, each species has its own unique habits and way of living.

Some species of whale are huge- two of the largest animals in the world are whales, the blue whale (measuring up to 100 feet in length), and the fin whale (measuring up to 88 feet in length). But whales can come in all sizes; the Hector’s dolphin measures only 39 inches in length. Whales are warm blooded mammals that breathe air, give birth to live young, and nurse their calves. Research shows that whales can live for an extremely long time. The bowhead whale is thought to have a lifespan of 200 years! Whale watching is a very popular activity involving a boat trip out on the ocean to observe whales. In some places, such as Hawaii and California, whales can be observed from land.

Despite the fact that most humans consider whales to be magnificent creatures they are still in danger of being hunted. Some whales are considered endangered due to over hunting. You can help protect whales by signing petitions letting our government know that whales need better protection. There are also many organizations dedicated to research, education, and ocean conservation; a donation to one of these organizations will help continue the fight to save our ocean’s whales.

Whales are beautiful creatures that have existed for thousands, perhaps millions of years. The songs of whales, particularly the Humpback Whale, have been recorded by humans. Humpback whales are ones we most often see when they migrate towards the islands and their haunting lyrical songs have been used by humans for study, music, and stress relief. The whales sing to communicate and to attract mates. Whales are the largest animals today on our planet and though they live in the water, they are considered mammals. They are warm blooded, breathe air, and bear live young which are nursed with milk.

Whales follow or migrate to feed. Generally going north. When breeding and calving, whales travel to the warmer southern waters. They travel in pods of 1 to 3 and can combine with others, up to 150 whales or so at a time. As humans, we must continue to protect these mystical endangered species. Pollution, fishing gear, hunting, and climate changes can all affect whales detrimentally and damage their sonar. This may cause whales to become stuck on beaches or to die. It is up to all of us to preserve these majestic beings. Remember, we share this planet with them.

The whale originally lived on land as a four legged creature. It went into the ocean and, over time, these mammals adjusted to living under water. There are many different kinds of whales. Like other mammals whales breathe oxygen; this is why they come to the surface of the ocean. They breathe the air and, often, exhale a veritable fountain of water through their blowholes.

Whales live in family units called pods. They’re extremely intelligent and communicate with each other through a complex system of sounds and body movements. The various pod families co-exist with other pod families and bond together within a larger social structure that may contain as many as 20 or 30 members. Whales travel, or migrate, long distances together. As they do they take care of each other and the calves. Members will band together to help protect sick or wounded members of the group. Older whales will watch for stragglers and help keep the entire group moving safely. Some of the males act as guardians, watching out for any dangers and then warn the group. During times of dangers each member of the group has an important role to play that helps keep everyone safe.
